CASA SCHINDLER

RUDOLF MICHAEL SCHINDLER:
Composition and Construction
Lionel March y Judith Sheine

Synopsis

RM Schindler Composition and Construction Edited by Lionel March and Judith Sheine An exact contemporary of Le Corbusier and one-time employee in the offices of Frank Lloyd Wright, a student of Adolf Loos and Otto Wagner in Vienna whose work first found full expression in the California of the 1920s—the story of the life and works of RM Schindler (1887-1953) lies close to the heart of the history of early 20th-century architecture as a whole. Schindler was an individualist and an innovator, he learned well from his teachers, in particular from the Raumplan of Loos, but developed in America his own wholly distinctive formal approach, paralleling the advances of the Modern Movement and often transcending the limitations of the International Style.

His original conception of Space Architecture, expounded in his writings and applied in his works, is a classic expression of modern architectural thought. With his proportional system, the Space Reference Frame, and the more concrete and pragmatic design and building techniques of the Schindler Frame, Schindler's Space Architecture provides a coherent and disciplined approach to design. The Lovell Beach House has long been acknowledged as one of a half-dozen key early American modernist buildings, but readers of this volume will encounter much else besides;a canon of works including many other houses of great beauty, apartment buildings and Schindler's custom-built furniture. Arising out of events staged to mark the architect's centennial in 1987, this volume offers copious documentation, a critical overview and a fresh reappraisal of Schindler's thought and works. A wide selection of Schindler's own writings is presented, including anew translation of his manifesto of 1913, alongside a range of articles by the foremost scholars of his works. The book features a wealth of plans, line drawings and photographs of built works.

CASA GEHRY

FRANK O. GEHRY: THE COMPLETE WORKS
Franceso Dal Co y Kurt W. Foster

Ever since his wildly dramatic Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, opened in 1997, Frank Gehry has been widely and justifiably considered the leading architect of our time. Although this ascension occurred seemingly overnight, it actually took more than half a century, counting architecture school and work in eight other offices before he opened his own firm in 1962. Since then, Gehry's designs have become increasingly freer and more inventive.

He first explored existing design approaches such as Frank Lloyd Wright's, Southern California vernacular, minimalist modernism, and Miesian structuralism before blazing his own trail. This included corrugated cardboard furniture, chain-link fencing, unfinished metal siding, exposed wood studs, and other "cheapskate" materials; skewed geometries; and a recurring preoccupation with fishlike building forms. He learned to fragment buildings into discrete components (often making each room a structure unto itself), experiment with color, create forced perspectives, and, above all, bring natural light indoors masterfully. His recent designs tend to be baroque and romantic in ways never before seen, often resembling sails or abstracted flowers. Gehry's architecture is an art that involves great risk taking, and while not every design succeeds fully, his courage is exemplary and his batting average is surprisingly high.

For readers who truly want to know about Gehry, The Complete Works is indispensable. It documents 250 works, even early ones that other architects might conveniently omit, and the material is well illustrated on 614 oversized pages. Insightful essays by two eminent architectural scholars set the stage for this massive and unrivaled traversal of Gehry's designs. --John Pastier --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

HOMENAJE A...
